Irina Werning takes old photos and puts you back into them: so cool.

I just came across these photos done by photographer Irina Werning. She takes old photos, has the subject repose in a similar way, then she tweaks it in Photoshop. It has an uncanny way of showing how you’ve grown and changed, though weirdly, how you haven’t changed. Check it out:

Here is what Irina says in her words:

“I love old photos. I admit being a nosey photographer. As soon as I step into someone else’s house, I start sniffing for them. Most of us are fascinated by their retro look but to me, it’s imagining how people would feel and look like if they were to reenact them today… A few months ago, I decided to actually do this. So, with my camera, I started inviting people to go back to their future.”

Everyone who knows me knows I have a thing for vintage. So, when I came across these fabrics at Spoonflower by Heather Dutton I swooned. In case you hadn’t heard, Spoonflower is a fabric design shop where you, the designer, can have any designs made into fabric.

The best part is that you can then choose to keep this fabric in the Spoonflower shop and you get a portion of the proceeds when someone else buys it. Round About

So, if you have any of your designs sitting around, why not upload them onto Spoonflower.

Entangled

Oh, and they have contests for the best designs every week, maybe you’ll win something.

FInally, here are 7 things about myself:

1) I adore my family and my kids. I can seem like a 1950′s mom because I love cooking, decorating and entertaining, but I do it because it gives me pleasure not because I’m a wuss. (Really).

2)  I am secretly very self-centered, I long to put my needs first and spend the whole day daydreaming about my creative projects (which sometimes I do.)

3) I am OBSESSIVE about decorating, designing and creating just about anything. I can make myself and those around me CRAZY with my obsessive need to finish one of my creative projects. Creativity is what gets me out of bed in the morning (and keeps me awake at night).

4) I am stubborn and secretly think I can do anything creative if I only had the time…I would rather do it myself than hire anyone to do it for me. (Though they can usually do it better)

5) I love being in the middle of a good book (but watch TV more)

6) I am terrified of confrontation. (but won’t back down if cornered).

7) I am more interested in people with a sense of humor than a keen mind. (Make me laugh and you have my undying loyalty).

Great Ideas for Making a Clever and Creative Snowman

I know this isn’t REALLY a posting about cards, but you could use one of these  great snowmen ideas on your Christmas card by posing with one of them. Anyway, these snowman sculptures are clever , creative and downright fun. I just saw a posting over at Simplebites on ideas for taking kids for a picnic in the snow. That could combine well with spending a few hours making one of these guys. Taking a break for a snow picnic while making the BEST SNOWMAN EVER would be the kind of thing that  children remember for the rest of their lives.

Frosty Winter Wonderland Wedding in the Snow

I thought I would finally get away from showing Holiday cards since it’s well past Christmas. It’s time to talk about weddings. Not the season you say? Au contraire.  I was inspired by a posting at eastsidebride.com to think about winter weddings. A bride wrote in this week asking about what sort of dress she should wear for a winter wedding in Chicago. It got me thinking about how I would do a winter wedding. Where would it be, what I would wear, what HE wear? What would be the theme, the look, the cake and finally about what sort of invitation would I send? Here is where my musings took me.

First of all I would start with the classic winter wedding at a castle, this one is in England, but what having a wedding in Scotland or Sweden? Oooh, what about Moscow, that way we would be sure to have snow.

Then maybe I could get married in a Russian Orthodox Church, and I could wear a crown and get married in Russia.

If I had a Russian style wedding I could use an invitation like this, purple could be a fun color to add in with red for a wedding.

Card by Hohumcards.com

Here is a bride who chose to have bridesmaids in purple. Purple looks great against the snow.

But alas, I am not Russian Orthodox and I have no connection to Russia. I think I would just choose somewhere snowy in the countryside or mountains at a place like this. Yes, that’s more me, having a  beautiful winter wedding at a chapel in the countryside in the mountains.

Since that’s the case then I would definitely want to keep warm, so I would need gloves and a coat….

…and I would absolutely incorporate white fur into my wedding outfit. While we’re at it, I would get fur for the bridesmaids as well because I don’t want them to be cold eitherPhoto from Frosty Weddings, photo by Michelle Wells

But I think I like a shorter stole for my fur coat, like this one below. Maybe I would have red flowers like her as well? But then I would need accents of red everywhere…hmmm. I’m not sure about that yet. I DO know that I don’t want my groom to wear a red knit cap, although, I am liking the fact that he is looking a bit casual and different…

Photo Found at Frosty Weddings

I would definitely want it to be snowing so I could get a cool shot like this one… the umbrella is great in this picture though maybe it is not that practical for the groom. I DO know that I want my groom to be looking at me this way though when he sees me.

Photo found at Frosty Weddings; Photo by Alison Conklin

I like the idea of train tracks for a photo, but I’m not sure how that works into the wedding itself.

But I like the relaxed way the groom above is dressed in casual black tie, he looks cool. And I also like how, below, the groom looks like quite a dandy wearing an old-fashioned looking version of black tie in very long tails and a bowler. I wonder if my groom would go for it? I still like the idea of having a SLIGHTLY Russian wedding look by wearing a long jacket like this bride’s  below over my wedding dress.

Found at OffbeatBride.com photographed by Anna Kovaleva

Or maybe my groom has a bit of Scottish blood and would go for wearing a kilt ?

I love the fact that the bride is wearing boots here, but I would prefer fur boots for my wedding outfit like these below. So I guess that leaves the kilt idea out, my fantasy winter wedding is seeming more snowy and wintery, less Scottish.

And I’m still wondering if my bridesmaids should wear red…or burgandy maybe? Hmmm, while I like the photo below, I’m starting to think that the strong colors are not really me.

But I do want some sort of sense of fun, maybe a winter activity would be a good idea to add to the day’s events  (and what a great photo-op as well). We could all play hockey after the wedding ceremony….

or maybe ski….

…but I really would not want to be in a ski outfit…too unflattering! Fur it is!

And of course I would have to hire a my friend,  Tanya Malott, NY wedding photographer,  so I can have amazing pictures like this…

But I would be wearing this fur coat in the countryside instead of underneath the Brooklyn Bridge.

I finally decided about the red. I realized as soon as I saw this cake that I would want my accents to be blue, or silvery, and I would have a cake like this:

In fact, here is the mood board I would use for my wedding….more or less. I love the cheese board, and the blue and silver accents. I like lots of silver ornaments in fact mixed in with the pinecones and other natural elements.

…I love the cashmere sweater over the wedding dress, but I don’t want to give up on the white fur idea.

So, finally for this magical, silver and blue winter wonderland wedding in the snow, what would I do for a wedding invitation? If I were going for a very classic kind of winter wedding invitation I may choose this:

Personalize it at http://hohumcards.com

Or, if I were going for a modern winter wedding invitation maybe I would choose something like this:

Personlizable at here at hohumcards.com

or this

Or if I were going for a groovy 1950′s sort of invitation I may select this one:

Personlalize it at http://hohumcards.com

But I think my wedding is more of a country casual winter wedding, so I would choose to send out an invitation like this one printed on extra heavy cotton card stock:

Personalize it at here at hohumcards.com

Or maybe this one would be a better color?

And then my winter wedding save the date card could be something like this. If I were tight for cash, maybe I would opt to send it as an e-card, and then I have even more money left over for hot buttered rums as my guests get as they arrive at the reception hall.

Save the date card at Http:/hohumcards.com

Then, after the reception, off we would ride in our sleigh together and we live happily ever after.

(But the driver would be wearing blue).

Submitted holiday cards…creative , clever and fun

I have been a bit remiss in showing all of the cards that have been submtted recently. What can I say? The holidays really get in the way, as does the flu, family reunions and buying and returning gifts.

So, finally, here are a few fun, creative and clever cards from this season, all submitted by readers like you.

Submitted by Theresa Thompson

who said about it “We’re a family of “closet carnies.”  My husband and I met at a Jugglers Anonymous meeting so I thought it only fitting to do a “freakish” Holiday card.”

Submitted by Kirk Small.

Here is what he has to say about it:

“MY GRANDFATHER WAS AN AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER AND IN THE 20′S AND 30′S SENT OUT A STRING OF XMAS CARDS THAT ARE FAMILY TREASURES. ABOUT EIGHT YEARS AGO, WE COPIED THE CONCEPT OF ONE OF HIS MOST MEMORABLE CARDS. OUR XMAS CARDS FROM THAT YEAR AND SINCE HAVE BEEN IN HONOR OF HIS TALENT AND SENSE OF FUN; EACH HAS BECOME A SNAPSHOT OF OUR FAMILY’S JOURNEY TOGETHER.”

Submitted by Connie Logsdon who said she made this in layers and put them together in Photoshop

Submitted by PHK

who says”the littlest boy in the blue shirt is not a septuplet, we had everybody pose with him separately then photoshopped them all together”

Made by Chris Ewart
My 10 year old daughter and I draw together and decided it would be fun to draw photos of ourselves and add all of our family travels and accomplishments over the past year.

The card was created for a very close family member, we recreated the famous scene from the beginning of the television series, “Fantasy Island.” Their oldest son being the “Mr. Roarke” character and their adoped son playing the character of “Tattoo.”

Submitted by David Marshall
Who said “It started in 2003 in which we decided the regular family portrait was just dull.  our family and friends now REQUIRE we do something creative each year.  This photo is last years.”

Submitted by Connie Logsdon
who said “My youngest was born December 17th, so we made this a birth announcement, “Unto us a child is born…” on the inside with his statistics.”

Our pictures are usually representative of whatever fictional events that we’ve written about  in our Christmas letter.
This year, the story was that my wife started a “hip-hop/rap” career.  We have an accompanying recording of her first rap available here:
Here’s the letter.——-

December 2010
Ho Ho Ho and a Yo Yo Yo Everybody,
As most of you know (those that actually read our letters), last year we started a family biker gang. But about 20 minutes into Bike Week down in Daytona Beach, we realized that we probably aren’t the biker gang type. Maybe it was our accents, maybe our clothes, or maybe it was because we were the only bikers driving a car. Either way, we didn’t belong. It was like when you go to the store, try on a hat, and look at yourself in the mirror and you realize “I’m just not a hat person.” Only in our case, the “hat” wasn’t a hat at all, but a helmet.
Deep down, we know that we’re still a type of gang. But, if we’re not a biker gang, what type of gang are we? Well, in order to answer this question we each took a quiz on Facebook that answered the question “Which famous ‘Happy Days’ character are you?” and we think that gave us a start. Lonnie got “Potsie” and Sara got, as you probably guessed, “Arthur Cunningham”. With both of these characters being pivotal figures in the founding of Rap music and the Hip-Hop lifestyle (at least according to Wikipedia), we realized “we’re not the biker gang type, we’re the Hip-Hop type”.
Being in Nashville, we have access to all kinds of Rap resources, especially with the internet. Sara quickly became a student of Rap, if you will, buying and listening to all the songs she could so that she could start writing her own songs. But because Lonnie insisted that she only buy the “edited” versions of these songs rather than the “explicit” versions, Sara didn’t realize that certain words had been omitted due to content. She thought they were only blank spaces. For a few weeks, she thought that Rap music was just a series of sentence fragments and unfinished thoughts. Then she was horrified. Now she writes Rap songs under the moniker Que-SaRa about the hardships of motherhood and has the FCC (Fowler Censorship Committee – also known as Lonnie) bleep out words so she sounds legit.
But “what about our darling children?” you might ask. C-Note (Coyle’s new nickname) is excited about his new turntable and his low-rider big wheel and has been turning heads everywhere we go with his new “grill” of gold teeth. He’s more than happy to tell everyone that his little brother Shorty (Miles) just got his first two gold teeth. They grow up so fast, don’t they?
Many of you might be worried about us spending so much money on our children’s toothy bling. What about their college fund or more importantly, the hot tub Sara wants to put in? You can all rest easy because it didn’t cost us a cent. We just melted down our wedding rings. We’re not as stupid as some of you give us credit for.
Be on the lookout for Sara’s latest single “Bleep on My Hands”, the only Rap written about a diaper change. For realz.
May all your Christmaseses be white,
FCC, Que-SaRa, C-Note, Shorty, and K-Dawg
you can listen to Que SaRa’s rap here. . .http://soundcloud.com/lonnieleefowler/bleep-on-my-hands-by-que-sara

Kardasian Christmas Cards over the years. Yikes.

I have just come across some of the Kardasian Christmas cards over the years found on Kim Kardasian’s site. They are quite freaky; I can’t seem to stop looking at them. For once on the subject of Christmas cards, I’m speechless.

Here is the one they just did this year, 2010. I am wondering if they meant it to look so Goth/ Adams Family, but I fear it was not meant to be ironic. Or maybe they were going for the mobster look. I can’t decide.

And here are some from previous years. I’m afraid they are quite consistently freaky….uh….sexy.  I so wish it they were all tongue in cheek.

Hot…or not?

Hotter…or notter?

And what, pray tell, does a motorcycle have to do with Christmas?

I guess the photographer told all of the young Kardasian girls that splaying their legs suggestively at that age was a good thing.

My they all look so young, is Bruce the dad or the brother? (Tuck in your booby Kim).

And here we are back to where we started…a Kardasian Goth Christmas card.

Amazing Creative Christmas Cards from the Bale Family

These holiday cards were just submitted by the Bale family and they are some of the best series of cards I’ve seen this year. I adore how this family really goes for it every year always with a creative sense of fun and flare. It helps that Dad is pretty skilled at Photoshop, though it should be noted that the photos for all of these cards are taken by themselves with a timer. I am in awe.

This was their card in 2007. It’s a  fabulous Christmas card where they are helping each other get a star on the tree using in the style of “Cirque du Bale”.  I’ve seen many cards with this theme. but this one is particularly imaginative in the way they lean against each other. Lori Bale (Mom) says that they did this in 5 shots all photoshopped together by Dad. The dog was separate, Mom and Dad were taken in front of a green screen, then one of Mom and her daughter, then one of the kids, and finally, the tree was added into the back ground as the 5th shot. This card is a huge success; it’s one of my all time favorites Christmas cards. It’s incredibly creative and incredibly well executed, a perfect combination.

This is the Bale family Christmas card 2000 of the family reflected in an ornament. This is a wonderful idea which I’ve seen quite a lot, but this one is very well executed. I think I may do a blog posting soon showing all of the ornament reflection shots I’ve come across.

Here is their card in 2001.  Great Christmas card of kids inside of a snow globe. This is a fun twist on the snow globe card with the kids looking at it from outside as well as being inside. I did a posting on snow globe Christmas cards which this card would fit into perfectly.

Here is their 2003 Great Christmas card of two kids looking inside their fish bowl decorated for Christmas. I have never seen the fishbowl theme, I love the hats on the fish. I wonder if the line inside the card was “Fishing You a Merry Christmas”?

This is the Bale Family Christmas card from 2004 of a photo of their dog stealing a slipper of one of the kids. It’s such a cute idea for a Christmas card. I am curious if this was one shot of photoshopped together.

Here is the Bale family card from 2005 where each member of the family holds a blank card and they are photoshopped one within the other. Photos of frames within frames are another theme I may explore in another posting.

The Bale family Christmas card 2009 made with Sparklers with time lapse photography. See more cards using light and time lapse photography.

And here is their card form this year, 2010. I love it!  They posed the family into a scene mimicking the Norman Rockwell painting, “Freedom From Want”, but with a modern twist. This reminds me very much of a card by Theresa Thompson mimicking the same painting. Notice the dog, the lizard and the rabbit at the table. I also like the original Norman Rockwell painting in the background.

And finally in honor of the day, here is a New Year’s Day card from the Bale family from 2002. On this one they photoshopped more confetti into the picture.

A huge thank you to the Bale family for taking the time to share these with me. I look forward to seeing what they come up with next year.

Happy New Year!

More Christmas cards are coming they are still coming in and I am struggling to keep up.

Funny Quotes on New Year’s Resolutions

Here are some of the best  witty, humorous quotes about New Year’s Resolutions I could find.  I thought that if you were thinking of sending a card one of these would help to spice it up a bit.

Now there are more overweight people in America than average-weight people. So overweight people are now average… which means, you have met your New Year’s resolution.

Creative Prop Ideas for Taking Photos of Children for your Card this Christmas

A clever idea can make or break a holiday card photo shoot. From giving children building blocks to play with, or angle wings, props can be a useful tool to getting that perfect holiday picture. In my experience, we parents only have about 5 minutes to shoot a decent photo, after that the children have lost interest and are in danger of being uncooperative at best, at worst, of having a complete meltdown. The best way to get around this is to give them an activity or a prop to get them to cooperate. Lets face it, unless we’re super models, it’s tough for ANYBODY to pose comfortably in front of the camera with somebody saying “smile”. The photo is always much better if they’re smiling already, right? The following photos use props in a variety of ways and get that fabulous shot worthy of any Christmas mantle.

Let it Snow

I know I’ve shown this photo before, but for me, Marc Battaglia’s picture of his kid on a sled with the dog in a harness is one of the best examples of using props that I’ve seen. The caption is great as well. And how much do you love the V of the Geese up in the sky?
This child has building blocks spelling the word “JOY”. I love the Christmas message being already in the photo.

Cute picture of a baby in the tub with words spelled out behind him in plastic letters. I think this is a very clever idea for a Christmas card… or any card for that matter.  You could spell all sorts of things with these letters, from “Happy Birthday Daddy” to “Please Come to my Party”

I love the Santa legs in this photo shoot, the kid is, of course, going to look up engagingly and all the photographer has to do it shoot. What better prop than Santa?
